Without even knowing the man’s colorful history in music it is pretty clear that Greg Godovitz has been at it for a long time. You can tell a seasoned performer in a pinch and the former bassist, front man and founder of legendary Canadian 70’s rock outfit Goddo is among the more well-seasoned out there. His first solo outing, aMuseMe is a rock gem and whether it’s the warm organ tones sprinkled throughout, the sometimes soaring saxophone keeping things funky or the deftly played guitar work, aMuseMe ought to get even the crustiest curmudgeon out of their seat and moving. This album truly has something that will tickle the fancy of most any music lover.
Produced by Loverboy’s Paul Dean and featuring a cast of excellent musicians, aMuseMe is a ride through the issues of relationships and women.
There is definitely a sass and humorous thread at play on songs like “Sex In Blue Jeans” and especially on “You Are My Drug” where Goddovitz names off every mind altering substance in the book in relation to the woman of his fancy. “A Jealous Fool” and “He Will Never Be” are a couple of my personal favorites, with their impeccable rock vibe and memorable tune. This is classic song writing that begs for hit single status and will no doubt be future favored live cuts. Then there is “Darya” which also gets a nice reprised instrumental version. Probably the most diverse song on this album, “Darya” is clearly a love tune for someone important. It’s a breath taker that moves through standard balladry with some Latin guitar picking that is just gorgeous and whomever this song was written for should be well honored.
This is most definitely classic rock at its best, capturing a musical essence of the last four decades in a neat little modern package. Where Goddo was high energy and higher frequency, Godovitz solo outing resembles well-aged wine, still potent but smoother and more relaxed in all the right places.
Not that he ever really left, Greg Godovitz is back at it and brings a well timed platter of music with aMuseMe that is a listening pleasure from top to bottom.
