It’s rare that music grabs me so quickly the way Oldbury did at first blush. There is no denying the sheer fun and energy this Red Deer, Alberta 4-piece have going for them and it’s really no surprise that they took home the $10,000 first prize in Calgary’s recent Get Indie’d competition earlier this March.
Their newly released second album titled Ride! is a fast and furious chunky rock album with some 90’s snotty SoCal punk leanings, but for the most part they’re just energetic as all hell and damned near unstoppable.
Ride! opens with “Manputee”, a jumpy little number that immediately shows how much the band has grown in all around shape and size since their first album, Too Many Late Nights. Vocalist Josh Baynes’ voice is 10 times stronger and the rhythm section has beefed up considerably. “Manputee” is an instantly memorable piece of music and a great way to open the album up.
“Thailand Song” and “Loss Vegas” are about as “light” as it gets here, both exploring a more subdued classic rock sound with Thailand having an almost olden times wandering minstrel/pirate fight song feel to it while Vegas is just a good old fashioned hard rock anthem complete with wicked breakdowns and a sing along chorus that does the heart good. And then there’s “Car Ride” which is just killer! With ridiculously sing along lyrics and a punch I haven’t heard the likes of since Green Day hit their stride back in the mid 90’s, this track has “hit” written all over it.
What makes music like this so great is that it is unflinching in its attitude, which is positive at best, both in lyric and sound. Sometimes all you need at the end of a long day are anthemic rock jams about love lost, love found, drinking beer, and kicking it with your pals. Rarely slowing down for a breather, each and every one of these quality tracks are high octane and instantly memorable.
Promoters, agents, and music lovers alike, take note. This is a musical muscle machine you definitely want to take a ride on.
