The final night of the Calgary Stampede’s Coca-Cola Stage kicked off with Dizzy. This quartet from Oshawa, Ontario entertained the crowd with a 30-minute set consisting of tracks from their JUNO Award winning debut album, Baby Teeth. The crowd was appreciative of their almost ethereal, indie pop, alternative sound.
Washington State natives, Death Cab for Cutie were the final headliners of the 2019 Coke Stage line-up.
With a huge library of material from their nine studio albums, over a 20+ year career, there was no shortage of hits during last night’s performance.
Probably the most memorable was frontman, Ben Gibbard taking center stage alone, while his bandmates waited in the wings. Gibbard first got a few laughs as he assured the crowd that, although some artists may insert a host city’s name into a song as a cheap form of sycophantic behavior, the fact that “Calgary” appears in the lyrics of the song he was about to perform is indeed, genuine.
Then, with acoustic guitar slung on his shoulder, he proceeded to perform their mega-hit, “I Will Follow You Into The Dark”. It was quite sweet and touching to hear a crowd of several hundred sing every word with Gibbard, and, when that special line came; “You and me we’ve seen everything to see. From Bangkok to Calgary and the souls of your shoes …” the voices got louder and cheers followed. And THAT is why we attend live concerts; for those moments. The show could have ended right there, and I think fans would have been perfectly happy and satisfied, but of course it didn’t – we were only half-way through their energetic and entertaining 90-minute set.
It was a perfect summer evening with music fans cheering as the 2019 Calgary Stampede Coca-Cola Stage performances came to an end, till next year.
I wonder what the line-up will be for 2020?
