The last night at the Calgary Stampede’s Coca-Cola Stage was, in a word, spectacular!
Edmonton artist, Faith Healer started the show with a low-key, 30-minute folk music set.
Toronto based band, July Talk, made their second appearance at the Calgary Stampede, headling the night with their bluesy alternative rock. With a couple thousand fans standing shoulder to shoulder in the cool night air, frontwoman, Leah Fay started the evening acknowledging the traditional territories of the Blackfoot, and the people of Treaty 7 – the land Calgary calls home.
Known for their energetic and entertaining live performances, July Talk is Peter Dreimanis (vocals, guitar, keys), Leah Fay (vocals), Ian Docherty (guitar), Josh Warburton (bass) and Danny Miles (drums). The chemistry between Dreimanis and Fay is remarkable, and the two are a joy to watch, as they share fronting duties. Dreimanis’ gravely vocals are a perfect complement to Fay’s sweeter voice.
Through an almost 90-minute set, Dreimanis and Fay playfully teased each other, constantly moved throughout the stage and even braved the energetic crowd. More than once, Fay stood on the railing of the stage barrier, holding fans’ hands to steady herself. Dreimanis, while playing guitar, decided to try a little crowd-surfing, to the delight of everyone. At one point, noticing things getting a little wild in the crowd, Fay stopped the show to remind those in the mosh pit to stay safe, and look out for each other.
This was my third time seeing July Talk and I can only think to sum of the evening like this … the music is smart and unique … their musicianship is stellar … and their showmanship will blow you away!
